The new king of the Marathon is Kenya’s Vitalis Kibiwott, who won the 24th Wizz Air Milano Marathon in 2:06:35. Second place went to Amos Kiprotich Kiplagat (Kenya) in 2:08:14, followed by Labam Kiplimo (Kenya) in 2:08:23.
A fantastic performance in the women’s race by Ethiopia’s Yeshii Kalayu Chekole, who clocked 2:20:15 — the fastest women’s time on Italian soil this year and the second-fastest ever at the Milano Marathon. Runner-up was fellow Ethiopian Iddeessaa Eebbisee Addunyaa in 2:21:13, with Sintayehu Tilahun Getahun (Ethiopia) finishing third in 2:25:29.
Xavier Chevrier finished ninth and was the top Italian at the finish line with a time of 2:11:50. A leading figure in Italian mountain running, he was making his debut over the marathon distance.
Paolo Bellino, CEO of RCS Sports & Events:
“It was a wonderful four days of sport, culminating in the spectacle of the Wizz Air Milano Marathon. The start from Corso Sempione was a great success. The three waves of 5,000 runners each were spectacular — we used to have one and a half waves. Then there were the relay teams, making for a start that lasted a full hour. We should also highlight the incredible participation of the city and its residents, not only at the start but all along the course. It was a fantastic sporting weekend, further enriched by Saturday’s events — the Enel Family Run and the Arcaplanet Dog Run— which were hugely successful, involving nearly 10,000 people. Above all, we have set a new record for charitable fundraising on Rete del Dono: we are currently at €2 million, compared to €1.8 million last year, and we expect to reach €2.2 million. A great result that underlines the charitable spirit of the Milano Marathon.”
Martina Riva, Councillor for Sport, Tourism and Youth Policies of the City of Milan:
“Seeing the city celebrating, filled with thousands of runners, is always emotional. Milan loves the marathon, and the marathon loves Milan. The record number of participants and the strong international presence confirm the value of this event, not only from a sporting perspective but also from a tourism standpoint. Alongside the race, the Running Festival and the Family Run make this weekend even more inclusive and engaging, bringing together families and citizens in a great celebration of sport and community.”
