The Dream
Imagine a world in which every single person is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge and each person can contribute with their own expertise, to build together a more informed, democratic, and fair society, thanks to the sharing of free and public domain content.
This is the dream that Wikimedia Italy has been making a reality every day for 20 years. We are a community-based non-profit organization and we support Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and OpenStreetMap.

Our mission is to enable everyone to access free, verified, and reliable information, and now more than ever we feel the urgency of this mission in a rapidly changing world, where the web is increasingly influenced by Artificial Intelligence and market-driven dynamics.

Our Projects
We support Wikipedia, the largest online encyclopedia, recognized by the United Nations as a digital public good. We defend its values and its guiding principle: making knowledge free and accessible to everyone, thanks to voluntary collaboration. We also support other Wikimedia projects, including Wikimedia Commons: the platform for sharing multimedia files released under free licenses, which today hosts over 120 million items.

We collaborate with cultural institutions so that they can freely share their cultural heritage: documents and artifacts of great historical and cultural value, at risk of being lost or left hidden in archives, are made available to everyone around the world.

We work with schools and universities, engaging teachers and encouraging students to read online content critically and to practice digital citizenship: taking part actively, protecting their privacy, and spotting fake news.

Together with OpenStreetMap volunteers, we create maps about the accessibility of subways, such as in Milan, or safe pedestrian routes to reach schools. We also teach in schools how to map places affected by natural disasters or conflicts, by using satellite images; with a simple click, anyone can make a difference, for example, by reporting whether a certain road is safe for ambulances to pass.

Run for Free Knowledge
By taking part in the charity marathon for Wikimedia Italy, you support our projects and help build spaces where everyone can play their part and access free, high-quality information. Supporting free knowledge means believing in a fairer community: when knowledge is accessible to everyone, barriers fall.
Run for Wikimedia Italy and protect a public good: knowledge, which belongs to everyone. Because knowledge is a right, not a privilege.
