Fondazione per la ricerca sulla fibrosi cistica ETS
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is one of the most common serious genetic diseases, with no definitive cure yet. Present from birth, it is caused by mutations in the CFTR gene. Those who inherit two mutated copies (one from each parent) develop the disease, which progressively damages vital organs, especially the lungs and bronchi, where thick mucus fosters chronic infections and inflammation.
In Italy, about two children are born with CF every week. Life expectancy exceeds 40 years, but patients must face demanding daily treatments:
up to 3 hours of respiratory physiotherapy every day
more than 7,000 pills each year
frequent hospitalizations
Worldwide, there are about 160,000 patients, including 6,000 in Italy.
