Here is the date: 16th May

Maratona Élite, Relay Marathon and Anywhere, three formats for one event. And a training programme, Gazzetta BeActive.

(Milan, 10th March 2021) The most coveted event for the runners, organised by RCS Sports & Events, will be held in Lombardy’s main city on the 16th May. And it will be a really special Generali Milano Marathon.

After postponing the 20th edition planned in 2020, due to the ongoing health emergency, the Organisers, in agreement with the FIDAL (Italian Athletic Federation), have fixed a new date for the competition in Milan that, given the results that have been gained in its 19 years of history, has become a top-notch international race in its own right. It will be raced on the 16th May. A brave choice to give a re-start message and offer an appointment to be saved on the calendar both for the first-rate runners and those who run to be healthy and do some good.

“Running together, anywhere”: This is the Leitmotif of Generali Milano Marathon Special Edition 2021, which will be unique in the event’s history because of its features.

The classic 42,195 metres will unfold on a fast 7.5km circuit, to be run several times, with City Life – the headquarters of Generali, Title Sponsor of the event since 2019 – at its heart.

The race – start at 7.00 am from via Demetrio Stratos – will be open to the élite runners invited by the organisation and the fast recreational runners with a qualifying time of at most 2h45’, up to a maximum of 120 participants overall.

The time to beat is 2h04’46’’ for men and 2h22’25’’ for women, both times set in 2019, by Titus Ekiru and Vivian Kiplagat respectively. The Organisers are expecting conditions apt to decrease once again the best performances ever made on Italian soil, because of a start list that aready looks as the best qualified one in the event’s history. We cannot forget that the appointment in Milan will be one of the few held in spring open to top runners who want to deliver a performance fit for the Olympic qualifying standards.

This year also, the marathon will be held along with the Relay Marathon that in 2021 sees the entry of a new Title Sponsor: Lenovo. The non-competitive relay marathon with 4-runner teams is strongly linked to the Milano Marathon Charity Program, a fundraising initiative where the runners support a Non-Profit Organisation. In 2019, it set a new record as it raised more than 1.3 million euros.

Following tradition but with a thoroughly modified model, the event is compatible with the restrictions we all know. First, the relay marathon (held from 10.00 to 16.00) will be open just to 2500 teams – this is the target that the Organisers have identified, far from the 4000 teams in the last edition. Then, to decrease the risk of crowds, there will not be any exchange zones: all the legs (two long ones, 13.9k – that is, two laps of the circuit – and two short ones, 7.2k) will begin from viale Boezio and end at the finish set up in piazza Elsa Morante, the same finish as the élite marathon. The runners will start like in a “time trial”, with 4 runners kicking off approx. every 7 seconds. At the end of the race, the individual performances will be added to calculate the team’s time.

The Organisers have carried out several mathematic simulations to find the ideal combination which limits the number of runners on the course at the same time and at the finish as much as possible. The data have been checked and validated by Marcel Altenburg from the “Crowd Safety and Risk Analysis” department, Manchester Metropolitan University, an international expert in the field.

What is really new in this Generali Milano Marathon Special Edition is that anyone anywhere can be an active (and charitable) part of the relay through the Anywhere race formula. Many other teams can run the races, two “long” and two “short” courses, on the 16th May, even though they won’t be physically present in Milan. In so doing, they will support their favorite Charity with Lenovo Relay Marathon Anywhere. Their race will be tracked with a dedicated App or any GPS device and will be uploaded on the portal of the event.

Anywhere will also be open to individual runners, under the condition of carrying out the activity on the 16th May, wherever they are, and running at least one leg of the relay. In this case also, the registration will be linked to a donation to one of the NPOs involved in this Charity Programme.

This is an alternative formula that, in the Organisers’ intentions, is not limited to this special year but lays the foundation for a wider participation in the Charity Programme.

For the first time, Gazzetta Active – the vertical section devoted to active sport – will be an integral part of the process to approach the Generali Milano Marathon through a comprehensive project, an actual digital training that will involve the runners, or wannabes, for two months, starting from mid-March: it is Gazzetta BeActive.

Nutritionists, trainers and influencers will alternate in the lessons available on and in live trainings on Instagram, fully supporting the participants in Lenovo Relay Marathon, wherever they are, at a physical, nutritional, and motivational levels, so as to be ready for the appointment on the 16th May.
